February 2026 - SAFETY UPDATE

The Pinellas County School District’s Safety Starts with Me campaign is sharing important information in recognition of Severe Weather Awareness Week, February 1–6, 2026.

In partnership with the Florida Division of Emergency Management, we remind our community that safety truly starts with each of us. Throughout this week, we encourage families and staff to prepare for the unexpected—whether it’s severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, or sudden cold weather. Florida’s weather can change quickly, and knowing how to respond during a weather emergency can make a critical difference.

Tornadoes can form rapidly with little warning. It’s important to know the safest place to go—such as an interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows—and to act immediately when a warning is issued. Understanding the difference between a tornado watch (conditions are favorable) and a tornado warning (a tornado has been spotted or indicated by radar) can help you respond quickly and safely.

This week is a great time to review your family’s emergency plan. Talk about where you’ll go during severe weather, how you’ll stay informed, and what emergency supplies you may need. Practicing these steps together helps ensure everyone feels confident and prepared.

Remember to stay ahead of the storm by monitoring weather updates, enabling emergency alerts, and following your school’s safety procedures. When we stay informed and prepared, we help protect ourselves and one another.

Let’s make safety a priority and remember Safety Starts With Me.
